Sunshine at City College

These and more are concerns throughout the state regarding Sunshine policies in certain institutions. City College is one. But, open government should be tantamount for all stakeholders and the public.

Bruce has been a long time resident of San Francisco since 1994.  He has worked on many causes and with community organizations.  He is a product of SF public education having attended City College of SF from 1995-98 and SF State University from 1998-2004 earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Social Work.

Bruce was appointed unanimously in 2005 by the SF Board of Supervisors and Mayor to the prestigious Sunshine Ordinance Task Force.

Bruce also serves on the important Prop H School Enrichment Fund Community Advisory Committee appointed by SF Unified School District Commissioner and Candidate for District 1 Supervisor Eric Mar which oversees nearly half billion dollars of city funds over ten years to arts, libraries, music, sports, pre-kindergarten, nurses, social workers and in-kind services.

In his fourth year, his work with fellow directors on the board of the SF Community Land Trust resulted in creating limited equity housing for long time residents in Chinatown who were being threatened with eviction at the proposed City College Chinatown campus.

After fifteen years living in Haight-Ashbury, Bruce decided to lend a helping hand as board member on the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood Council. Preserving an essential and cultural neighborhood in San Francisco is so important considering all the unecessary gentrification in recent years.
Bruce just finished serving on the 18-month study, Eastern Neighborhoods Community Health Impact Assessment that produced the nation’s first rezoning tool of specific scope on the environment.  It is currently being considered by San Francisco for adoption to its rezoning plans.

Bruce currently serves on the Municipal Transit Agency’s Transit Effectiveness Project and 18-month effort along with the City Controller’s Office whose goals are to improve MUNI’s overall performance, create a blueprint for future service, affordability and create a multi-year plan.

Bruce serves as board member or representative on many community boards and groups such as Sierra Club, SF Community Land Trust, Voters Injured At Work, SF Peoples Organization and the Coalition for Transit Justice.  He co-founded Progressive Voter Project that helps increase SF voter registration with a focus on absentee voters.  Bruce serves as the SF Ambassador of Voters Injured At Work that advocates for injured workers in the California Worker’s Compensation System in addition as the Education & Training Coordinator for the National Association of Social Workers’ Social Action/Social Justice Council.  He also serves on the SF Community Alliance of Disability Advocates and was a founding member of SF Peoples Organization, a community service association of nearly 40 local community organizations and unions.

While at City College and SF State, Bruce served in many active elected official positions on both Associated Students governments.  At CCSF, he was Executive Vice-President and Vice-President of Administration.  At SFSU, he was elected President, Vice-President of External Affairs, Chief Justice and Parliamentarian. He served on every committee and has an excellent understanding of the colleges’ operating administration and budgets.  Bruce also worked to increase accountability of the mandated Shared Governance process and bring more Sunshine and transparency of the colleges’ operations.

Bruce always advocates for students by mentoring and encouraging them in civic participation.  He has worked closely with the diverse student community helping many students achieve active and respected positions in student government and campus activities.

He has taken many courses to better understand the fabric of diversity and community in San Francisco including both Cantonese and Mandarin, music, art, philosophy and martial arts.  He has used this education to help better articulation to American students understand the teachings of Chinese masters of martial arts that frequently visit this country and live here.

Bruce has also spent his entire academic tenure advocating as a student for students in higher education at California’s Capitol in Sacramento.  He continues to work to reduce excessive tuition and class fees, increase college grants and opportunities for students to enter and maintain their college careers towards graduation.

Bruce holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a focus on Organizational Development and Life Coaching.  He is a Health Educator of over 25 years having taught Ergonomic Health & Safety and Wellness programs, and is also highly recognized nationally for his teaching of T’ai Chi and the Chinese Healing Arts.

Bruce is dedicated to excellent quality higher education for all.
